Coconut Oil and
Brain Health

There has been much said and written about Coconut Oil and Brain Health.

Stroke victims may benefit from the nutrition provided by consuming CO daily.

My husband had a stroke and he started taking it by the tablespoon.  We noticed that it helped him as he was recovering.

We have gotten a little slack on keeping up with tablespoon dosages, but I still use it in smoothies, all my baking, frying and other cooking so we are all still getting a good amount daily.

Taking a spoonful of coconut oil daily, provides a specific amount of the medium chain triglycerides for your brain health.

However cooking with it continues to add even more MCT's to your diet, because heating CO for cooking does not change its fatty acid profile.

This is a big plus and simplifies getting enough if you are considering incorporating coconut oil for your brain health.

This is according to a study in the International Journalof Gastronomy and Food Science, July 2021; and published as well on the sciencedirect.com website.

The study included such foods as popcorn, biscuits, frying, cookies, and Samosa dough. CO was submitted to cooking by dry heat, moist heat and food preparation without the use of heat.

This was all done to evaluate the fatty acid profile in CO in each of these situations.  All the preparations had the same levels of fatty acids regardless of method of preparation.

On a personal note, Coconut oil is my favorite oil to use, for all of the above listed food preparations.

It fries food crispier without being extra greasy,  has a high heating point and if there is any oiliness, it's healthy!

Makes great biscuits as well.

Coconut Oil
and
Alzheimers Disease

A study was conducted by academic researchers in Valencia, Spain, to support coconut oil's ability to reduce symptoms of "Alzheimers Disease",  (AD).

The following are the results they concluded with, and the thought, "that coconut oil could be a new non-pharmacological alternative in AD patients".

"After intervention with coconut oil, improvements in episodic, temporal orientation, and semantic memory were observed, and it seems that the positive effect is more evident in women with mild-moderate state, although other improvements in males and severe state were also shown."

Various Studies
Concerning
Coconut Oil and Brain Health

There are many *studies to be found on coconut oil, as well as medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), which makes up nearly 60 percent of CO total fat content.  Medium-chain triglycerides is just one of the many reasons coconut oil is so beneficial, especially for brain health.

*MCTs are a naturally occurring source of dietary fats that  are abundant in CO.  Our bodies quickly metabolize them to be used as an energy source by the brain.

Coconut oil also helps brain health due to it's high lauric fatty acid content.

**Lauric acid has been demonstrated to cross the blood-brain barrier and stimulate ketogenesis within the brain astrocytes.

Lauric acid has strong antifungal and antimicorbial properties as well.  According to an 1981 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition report, " Highly saturated tropical oils do not contribute to heart disease, but have nourished healthy populations for millennia".

*Dr. Jordan Rubin also stated that, "Unprocessed coconut oil is the healthiest, most versatile dietary oil in the world".

Quote by Dr. Mark Hyman
concerning the MCTs in Coconut Oil:

"When you eat the right fats, you increase your metabolism, stimulate fat burning and decrease hunger. One of my favorite fats is medium-chain triglycerides or MCTs, either in coconut oil or as a stand-alone oil."

Even with coconut oil, MCT oil, coconut milk and coconut meat being such a huge benefit to our brains, there are many other nutritious foods that help the brain as well.

You don't have to experience a stroke, as my husband and many others have to have brain struggles.

Those struggles can include  memory, confusion, fogginess, fatigue and other issues.

The causes are not necessarily our fault but more results, of our hectic and usually stressful lives.

I came across the book below which covers those problems for our brain, that are so common today.

Dr. Mark Hyman even shares his own struggles that affected his whole life, including his career as a doctor.

When scrips for pills and other standard remedies didn't bring a solution, he turned to nutrition and lifestyle changes, that turned his life around.

One of those changes included incorporating the best and healthest fats, for the brain to work more efficiently and improve over time.

We experienced some of the same results when we incorporated better fats. We specifically used and still use, coconut oil daily.

Finally concerning coconut, one abstract states that:

"Coconut is classified as a highly nutritious "functional food".  It is rich in dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals; however, notably, evidence is mounting to support the concept that coconut may be beneficial in the treatment of obesity, dyslipidaemia, elevated LDL, insulin resistance and hypertension."

There is much evidence that CO needs to be a staple in our diets today.

With it being beneficial in so many ways, internally and externally, for our health.

Coconut oil works as food, and for health, beauty and hygiene.

What an amazing product! Coconut oil and brain health could be something to really consider.
