Diatomaceous Earth is Silica and is made from the fossilized remains of tiny, aquatic organisms called diatoms. Their skeletons are made of a natural substance called silica.
Over a long period of time, diatoms accumulated in the sediment of rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans.Today, silica deposits are mined from these areas.
Silica is very common in nature and makes up 26% of the earth's crust by weight. Silicon, a component of silica, does not exist naturally in its pure form. It usually reacts with oxygen and water to form silicon dioxide.
Silicon dioxide has two naturally occurring forms: crystalline and amorphous. Most diatomaceous earth (food grade), is made of amorphous silicon dioxide.
Diatomaceous Earth/Silica abbreviated as DE, is a favorite mineral that we supplement with. We have taken it for several years and have really seen improvements in various aspects of our health.
that's needed is a tablespoon daily, stirred into some liquid or food,
my preferences are in orange juice, a smoothie or oatmeal. One study suggested that
vitamin C helps the Silica (Diatomaceous Earth), to assimilate better in our bodies.
who have taken DE internally, have reported increased energy, lessened
joint pain, smoother and softer skin, thicker hair, harder nails,
improved digestive health, easier bowel movements, irregularity gone,
clearer thinking and various other improvements in their health.
There are so many uses for diatomaceous earth. Below are some of our personal health experiences we have had, and still are, as we continue to use DE.
Diatomaceous Earth or Silica is referenced in my children's High School Biology book, books in my personal library and some from the public Library. There are many documented studies, as well as testimonials on the internet.
These studies come from a variety of sources including the EPA, OSHA, FDA, companies using it for commercial use, medical research and Gov. Agencies.
Diatomaceous Earth (Amorphous Silica) is listed as a totally nontoxic substance. Amorphous Silica DE, has no regulations unless it is processed commercially and changed from its Natural state, into Crystalline Silica.
There are thousands of non-pesticide products that contain diatomaceous earth.
These include skin care products, toothpastes, foods, beverages, medicines, rubbers, paints, and water filters.
Silica is naturally found in some foods and is added to many food products and supplements.
It is commonly used as an anti-caking agent in foods and supplements to prevent ingredients from clumping or sticking together.
It is sometimes added to liquids and beverages to control foaming and thickness.
The Food & Drug Administration lists diatomaceous earth as "Generally Recognized as Safe". "Food grade" diatomaceous earth products are purified and safe. They may be used in foods and as anti-caking materials in animal feed, or as clarifier's for wine and beer.
Research was done at the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center (GFHNRC), concerning Low Dietary Silica (otherwise known as silicon deficiency).
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, silica deficiency decreases the bone and blood concentrations of substances that stimulate cells, that form joint and bone cartilage and initiate bone calcification in experimental animals.
Recent research also confirms, that having adequate silica stimulates the formation of collagen.
Collagen is a protein that gives bones their strength and flexibility.
Collagen also gives joint cartilage its cushioning ability, and a scaffold upon which bone mineralization occurs.
So the good news is... Diatomaceous Earth is pure Silica with several good trace minerals!
Finally for those who like to know the science of something such as minerals.
Here it is:
Silica, or Silicon dioxide, is an oxide of silicon, as the name suggests. It has a chemical formula SiO₂ and is mainly found naturally in Quartz and diverse living organisms.
Silica is one of the significant constituents of sand in many parts of the world. It is one of the most abundant and most complex families of materials
There are so many great ways to use Diatomaceous Earth to improve your health.
We would be excited for you to share your experience.
Your story might help others who want to try more natural health products. Thank You!
